🔖 This article is part of the BorderConnect U.S. In-Bond Manager Guide

The Send In-Bond Status Query feature in BorderConnect’s U.S. In-Bond Manager allows users to request real time status information directly from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for a specific in-bond shipment.

Selecting Send In-Bond Status Query from the U.S. In-Bonds menu

This is the primary method for bringing existing in-bonds into BorderConnect for monitoring and management.

Sending a status query is especially useful when:

Situation Why send a status query
A broker or third party created the in-bond Pulls the official CBP status into BorderConnect
You want to track or close the in-bond electronically Creates an in-bond report in your dashboard
You plan to send arrival or export messages Confirms the current CBP record before updating it
You want to link the in-bond to an ACI eManifest Enables automatic closure when the truck arrives in Canada

It is strongly recommended to always send a status query before submitting:

  • In-bond arrival messages
  • In-bond export messages
  • Port diversion requests
  • Automatic ACI-based in-bond closure

Status queries can also be sent for:

  • Bills of Lading
  • Air Waybills

using the Search In-Bond Status Queries Page.

How to Send an In-Bond Status Query

You can access the status query feature in two main ways:

  • From the U.S. In-Bonds menu by selecting Send In-Bond Status Query
  • From the In-Bond Dashboard by clicking Send In-Bond Status Query

You will be taken to the Send In-Bond Status Query page.

Completing the Status Query Page

In-Bond Entry Number

Enter the full in-bond entry number exactly as shown on CBP Form 7512 or official in-bond documentation.

Guidelines:

  • Must be numeric only
  • No spaces, dashes, or special characters
  • Must include all digits

Once entered, click Send In-Bond Status Query to CBP.

What Happens After Sending

After submission:

  • The query is transmitted to CBP
  • You are returned to the In-Bond Dashboard
  • The new in-bond report appears at the top of the list
  • Initial status will show Transmitted

CBP typically responds within one to two minutes.

When the response arrives:

  • The in-bond report updates with current CBP information
  • Status, destination, quantities, and history are populated
  • The in-bond is now ready for arrival, export, or monitoring actions

Sending a Status Query From an In-Bond Report

If an in-bond report already exists, you can refresh its CBP status directly.

Steps:

  1. Open the in-bond report details page
  2. Click Send In-Bond Status Query
  3. The entry number is automatically filled in
  4. Click Send In-Bond Status Query to CBP

The updated response will appear in the report history.

Sending a Status Query From the Search Page

You can also initiate a query from the status query search screen.

From the Search In-Bond Status Queries Page:

  1. Click Send In-Bond Status Query
  2. Confirm or enter the in-bond entry number
  3. Click Send In-Bond Status Query to CBP

The transmitted query will appear in the results list below.

Best Practices for In-Bond Status Queries

Best Practice Benefit
Always query before arriving or exporting Prevents outdated or incorrect CBP updates
Query when taking over third party in-bonds Pulls official CBP data into your dashboard
Re-query stalled or stale in-bonds Confirms whether CBP has updated status
Use dashboard for monitoring Keeps all in-bonds centralized and searchable

Common Issues to Avoid

  • Entering spaces or dashes in the in-bond number
  • Using partial in-bond numbers
  • Skipping the status query before sending arrival or export messages

Doing so may result in rejects or missing CBP data.
