A specialized line-release method for production automotive parts destined for major manufacturers.

Overview

The A49 Automotive Release (Automotive Report & Release Document) is a simplified shipment release option used in highway mode for eligible automotive goods imported by the "Big Three" automakers.

It allows specific shipments to move quickly through the border using pre-approved line-release procedures instead of standard brokerage clearance (PARS).

Participating Importers:

• Chrysler Canada Ltd. (Stellantis)
• Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited
• General Motors of Canada Limited

✅ Eligibility: What Can Be Shipped?

Only goods that meet the strict definition of automotive production or service goods qualify. Mixing non-eligible goods on an A49 shipment is a compliance violation.

Production Parts Assembly-line components, OEM production materials. Service Parts Warranty parts, dealer replacement parts.	Office / Admin Stationery, office supplies, computers. Engineering / R&D Prototypes, pilot parts, blueprints. Equipment Machinery, tooling, empty racks.

Mixed Loads: If a shipment contains both production parts and office supplies, it cannot be released using A49. You must use a standard release type (e.g., PARS) for the non-eligible items.

The Form A49

At the First Port of Arrival (FPOA), the driver must present a completed Form A49 (Automotive Report & Release Document).

• Carrier Code: Must be clearly listed.
• Trailer Number: Must match the physical trailer.
• Supplier/Line Details: Accurate description of the parts.

Creating an A49 in BorderConnect

1 Start New Shipment

Inside your ACI eManifest, click Create New Shipment.

• Shipment Type: Select A49 Automotive Release (or "Non-CSA" depending on settings).
• Cargo Control Number: Enter a unique CCN.

Selecting A49 Shipment Type

2 Enter Details

Complete the remaining fields just like a standard shipment.

• Shipper: Name and Address.
• Consignee: Must be one of the eligible manufacturers (Ford, GM, Chrysler).
• Commodity: Description must clearly indicate automotive parts.

3 Transmit

• Click Save.
• Return to the manifest and click Sync with CBSA.

Timing: Like all ACI shipments, the data must be on file for at least 1 hour prior to arrival.
