Correcting an Arrived ACE Manifest

A guide to amending and updating manifests after the truck has arrived at the border.

Overview

Status of an ACE Manifest showing Truck Arrived at Border

Once a truck has arrived at the U.S. border, the rules for changing an ACE eManifest change significantly. The manifest enters a "locked" state where the Trip Number cannot be changed, and the manifest cannot be cancelled as a whole.

However, you can still correct data errors (like wrong weights, drivers, or even shipment numbers) by using specific transmission methods: Amendments and Shipment-Only Messages.

Golden Rule: Never attempt to cancel an arrived trip. Instead, use the Amend Completed Manifest button for simple data fixes, or use shipment-specific messages to add/remove cargo.

Quick Reference: Which Method to Use?

Type of Change Method Used Notes
Port of Arrival Amendment Edit directly on manifest header.
Truck / Trailer / Driver Amendment Update assignments on the manifest.
Shipper / Consignee Amendment Edit inside the shipment.
Commodity / Weight Amendment Edit inside the commodity section.
Shipment Type Amendment Edit inside the shipment.
Shipment Control Number (SCN) Shipment-Only Msg Complex: Cancel -> Resend -> Attach.
Adding a Shipment Shipment-Only Msg Send Unassociated -> Attach.
Removing a Shipment Shipment-Only Msg Send "Cancel Shipment Message".
Trip Number Not Allowed Locked permanently once arrived.

Method 1: Standard Amendments

Use this method for 90% of corrections: fixing typos, changing drivers, updating weights, or correcting addresses.

1 Edit the Data

Make your changes directly in BorderConnect (e.g., click Edit on the Shipment to fix a weight, or Quick Assign a new driver).

The Action Buttons on an Arrived Manifest

2 Send the Amendment

Under the Send to CBP dropdown menu (or Action buttons), select Amend Completed Manifest.

  • Status: The manifest will change to "Transmitted to CBP".
  • Result: Once accepted, it will return to "Truck Arrived at Border".

Method 2: Shipment-Only Messages

When you need to change the structure of the cargo (adding, removing, or renaming SCNs), you cannot just "Amend" the trip. You must speak to CBP about the specific shipment directly.

Shipment Only Options

Changing a Shipment Control Number (SCN)

If you used the wrong PAPS number, follow this precise sequence:

1. Open the shipment in BorderConnect. 2. Select Cancel Shipment Message (under "Shipment Only Send to CBP"). Wait for acceptance. 3. Edit the Shipment Control Number to the correct one and Save. 4. Select Send Unassociated Shipment. Wait for acceptance. 5. Select Attach Shipment Message. Wait for acceptance.

Adding a Forgotten Shipment

If the driver arrived but you forgot to declare a shipment:

1. Click Create New Shipment on the manifest and enter details. 2. Inside the shipment, select Send Unassociated Shipment. Wait for acceptance. 3. Select Attach Shipment Message. Wait for acceptance.

Removing a Shipment

If a shipment was declared but wasn't actually on the truck:

1. Open the shipment. 2. Select Cancel Shipment Message. 3. Once accepted, you can detach/delete it from BorderConnect to keep your records clean.

Best Practices

Tip Why It Matters
Wait for Acceptance When doing multi-step shipment fixes (Cancel -> Send -> Attach), always wait for CBP to accept one step before starting the next.
Don't Change the Trip # Since the Trip Number is the key identifier for the arrival, changing it is impossible. Only shipment data can be fixed.
Verify History Always check the History tab to confirm your amendment was actually accepted by CBP.
