Insurance Policy (ACE Data)

A guide to managing hazardous material insurance coverage details in BorderConnect.

Overview

An Insurance Policy in BorderConnect is a stored record of trucking liability coverage. These records are used to assign specific insurance details to Truck profiles when filing ACE eManifests.

While standard freight generally does not require insurance data to be transmitted to CBP, Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) shipments trigger a mandatory requirement for valid insurance information under CBP manifest rules.

Hazmat Rule: If you are hauling hazardous goods, you must have a valid insurance policy linked to the truck on the ACE eManifest. Failure to do so will result in a manifest rejection.

When is an Insurance Policy Required?

Scenario Required?
Standard non-hazardous shipment No
Hazardous materials shipment Yes
Truck carrying mixed load (Hazmat + General) Yes

Creating a New Insurance Policy

1 Access the Menu

Go to Manage Data > ACE Data > Insurance Policies.

2 Add Policy Details

Click New Insurance Policy. Enter the specific data required by CBP:

  • Insurance Company Name: The full legal name of the provider.
  • Policy Number: The complete identification number found on your certificate.
  • Issue Date: The date the policy was issued.
  • Policy Amount: The total liability coverage amount (e.g., $1,000,000).
Adding a New Policy

Managing Your Policy List

The Insurance Policies List displays all insurance policies saved in your BorderConnect account. From here, you can maintain your coverage records to ensure expired policies are removed.

The Insurance Policies List Page

Available Actions

Action Description
Edit Update policy amounts or fix typos in the policy number.
Delete Remove a policy.
Note: This will automatically unassign the policy from any trucks currently using it.

Assigning to Trucks

Once a policy is created, it becomes available in the Insurance Policy dropdown menu on the Truck Profile page.

By assigning the policy to the truck profile, BorderConnect will automatically pull the correct insurance data into the ACE eManifest whenever that truck is assigned to a hazardous shipment, saving you from manual entry on every trip.

Best Practices

Tip Why It Helps
Exact Name Match Use the full legal name of the insurer to avoid ambiguity with CBP.
Regular Audits Remove expired policies promptly to prevent drivers from selecting invalid coverage.
Double Check Amounts Ensure the Policy Amount meets the statutory minimums for the class of Hazmat being transported.
