You can access this page by:
- Clicking the Create Commodity button on the ACE Shipment Details Page.
- Clicking the Edit link next to an existing commodity.
- Using the Save and Add Commodity shortcut from the Start New ACE Shipment Page.
Tip: BorderConnect remembers your commodity descriptions. As you type a description, the system will suggest previously used entries, automatically filling in the Package Type and Weight Unit defaults you used last time.
Data Entry Fields
The following fields define the cargo being transported. Please refer to the legend at the bottom of the page to identify required fields.
Description of Goods
This is the most critical field for customs compliance.
- Requirement: Must be a plain language description detailed enough to identify the cargo.
- Limits: Up to 512 characters.
- Compliance: Must adhere to CBP's list of acceptable cargo descriptions.
- Warning: Vague descriptions (e.g., "Freight", "General Cargo") may result in border delays or penalties.
Weights and Quantities

| Quantity | The number of packages (must be a whole number). Select the package type (e.g., Boxes, Barrels, Pallets) from the dropdown. |
| Weight | The gross weight of the goods (must be a whole number). Select the unit (e.g., Pounds, Kilograms) from the dropdown. |
| Loaded On | Indicates where the cargo is physically loaded. Defaults to the trailer (if one exists) or the truck. Use the dropdown to change if necessary. |
| Marks and Numbers | Optional field to indicate any identifying marks or numbers on the packages themselves. |
